Conclusions of Our Safeguarding Review

We are pleased to be able to publish the conclusions of our commissioned review of safeguarding, conducted from December 2012 to March 2013. 

It is encouraging that the outcome of this four month long review is that it “Did not find evidence of any significant or systemic failings in safeguarding in Bishop Bell School.”  In addition, it identifies a range of very good practice including our “Impressive” staff recruitment procedures and the number of staff Safer Recruitment trained.

However, as a school we have witnessed some very sad events and are keen to do whatever we can to ensure that pupils in our care are as safe as they possibly could be.  Whilst safeguarding procedures and practices are clearly strong, we have been keen to learn from this review, and any other sources, about things we could do even better.

Therefore, we are glad to report that the review does identify some areas for further development and learning and will, we believe, provide a platform from which to build truly outstanding safeguarding practice at Bishop Bell School.

Cashless Catering

We are pleased to announce that The Bishop Bell CE School is installing a cashless catering system in May 2013.  The new system will allow us to continue with the development of the school meal service and will provide us with a more efficient, faster and, ultimately, better quality of service.

Ofsted praises continued improvement

We are delighted that the new Ofsted report recognises how much the school has improved in the two years since the last inspection. 

Inspectors praise the teaching quality, saying, "Teaching is good; an increasing proportion is first-class" and "There is more inspiring and first-rate teaching than when the school was last inspected.  This is at the heart of the improving trend in students' achievement".

In praising student behaviour Ofsted wrote that our new behaviour system has "had significant impact in reducing exclusions and in helping students to better manage their own behaviour".  In commenting upon this as a strength of the school they report about students' "willingness to learn... and their positive interaction with each other and with the staff".

Ofsted always report on progress since the last inspection, and in doing so they wrote that Leadership and Management has been "Instrumental in moving the school forward", that "results have risen markedly since the last inspection", including "the proportion achieving at the highest levels".  Importantly, in terms of meeting our motto of Aiming for Excellence, Ofsted concluded that "Gaps in performance between those who may be disadvantaged and others have reduced considerably".
